Lagundi for Cough and Asthma

Respiratory tract infections, including bronchitis and bronchiolitis are among the top ten leading causes of morbidity in the Philippines. Asthma is also the most common chronic respiratory disease in our country. Both conditions are expensive to treat and control as well having a negative effect on a person’s quality of life.

Lagundi (Vitex negundo), also called the five-leaf chaste tree.  Traditionally, the leaves have been used as a decoction to treat coughs, fevers, respiratory diseases and as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Several clinical trials involving adult and children patients with mild to moderate cough of non-bacterial origin showed that there was decreased frequency of cough by the third day using lagundi compared to placebo wherein frequency of cough deceased by the 6th day. There was also increased airflow/bronchodilation, improved ease of expectoration and disappearance of phlegm with patients treated with lagundi.

Several active components have been identified in lagundi: Chrysoplenol D is both a bronchodilator and an antihistamine; luteolin is an antihistamine; isoorientin is both an antihistamine and a leukotriene inhibitor; several iridoids have anti-inflammatory activity.

The Lagundi is available as a 300 and 600 mg tablet, and a 300 and 600 mg/5mL syrup. The Lagundi formulations are included in the Philippine National Formulary and thus may be purchased by both Government and private hospitals.

Lagundi is indicated for the relief of cough due to common cold, flu and mild to moderate acute bronchitis, and also for the relief of reversible mild to moderate bronchospasm in patients more than 2 years old with obstructive airway disease such as asthma, and chronic bronchitis.

Cough, asthma and respiratory infections are very common in the Philippines. Lagundi has been marketed by several local pharmaceutical companies with enormous success. It is a very popular over-the counter treatment for the above indications and also frequently prescribed by physicians.

Lagundi is an affordable, herbal medicine to treat cough and asthma. It was developed by Filipino researchers from Filipino plants to boost the Philippine Pharmaceutical Industry, provide new cash crops for farmers and offer Filipinos medical and financial benefits.

We are in need of pharmaceutical companies willing to produce, manufacture and distribute the product in the Philippine market.
