FIPS Seminar Highlights Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer for Nursing Informatics Students

The University of the Philippines Manila Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (UPM-TTBDO) conducted a seminar for Nursing Informatics students on 07 October 2026, at the Seminar Room, 2nd Floor, Sotejo Hall, UP College of Nursing.

The seminar introduced students to intellectual property (IP) protection, university technology transfer processes, and the role of IP in translating research and healthcare innovations into practical applications.

Three UPM-TTBDO resource speakers led the discussions. Engr. Marinela Gravidez discussed “Overview of IP and Tech Transfer,” covering fundamental concepts of intellectual property (patents, copyright, trademarks, and trade secrets) and their importance in protecting innovations. Engr. Julian de Lara presented “TTBDO Processes,” outlining innovation disclosure, IP protection and utilization, UP trademark use, and technology licensing procedures. Engr. Jed Bellen discussed “The Role of IP in Fostering Entrepreneurship, Research Utilization, and Equitable Healthcare Access,” highlighting how IP and technology transfer support entrepreneurship and bring research-based solutions closer to healthcare settings.

The program concluded with a question-and-answer session, giving students the opportunity to engage with the speakers and deepen their understanding of IP and technology transfer.

Through this initiative, UPM-TTBDO continues to promote innovation awareness among future healthcare professionals and encourage the responsible utilization of research to address healthcare needs.
