The University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) through its Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) raised intellectual property (IP) awareness to UP College of Arts and Sciences (UPCAS) after conducting its Fundamentals of the IP System webinar via Zoom last July 15, 2021.
With its long-standing mission to safeguard UP Manila’s intellectual property assets, the TTBDO once again extended its services by providing a comprehensive set of lectures for CAS, the home of the university’s finest ICT-related inventions and software creations.
The program started with a warm welcome from Dr. Leonardo R. Estacio, Jr., the dean of the college who also requested for the conduct of the online seminar. He was followed by Dr. Armando C. Crisostomo, the university Vice Chancellor for Research who reiterated the importance of understanding and protecting intellectual property rights especially for a college like CAS who is at the forefront of innovation.
Furthermore, the first half of the said webinar focused on the overview of the IP system which underscored its benefits and impact to the global innovation society. Moving forward, the program continued to highlight the most common IPs developed in the college such as patents, copyright and related rights, and trademarks. The discussion included requirements for protection and specific IP application processes.
The event was attended by a total of 26 participants all of whom are professors and instructors from the different departments of the college who are expected to reinforce the learnings from the event down to their colleagues at work and most of all to the students.
After the lectures, all participants were awarded certificates of participation which serves as affirmation that they were able to grasp the basics of intellectual property rights.
Meanwhile, Dr. Lourdes Marie S. Tejero, the director of the TTBDO encouraged the attendees to continuously produce excellent quality research and generously invited everyone to disclose their inventions to the office. She also emphasized that the TTBDO will always welcome all members of the UP Manila research community who is in need of IP assistance. (VSUbiña)
