The UP Manila Technology Transfer and Business Development Office, in collaboration with the UP Manila College of Medicine, recently held a webinar last April 3, 2023, entitled “Fundamentals on Intellectual Property”. The webinar was attended by a diverse group of medical professionals, faculty members, and students from the College of Medicine, and was facilitated by UPM TTBDO.
OIC Director Bienvenido S. Balotro, RPh, MSc, DBA delivered the opening remarks, welcoming the attendees and encouraging them to consult the UP Manila TTBDO for their IP concerns such as IP Protection, IP Licensing, and IP Commercialization among others. A brief introduction to Intellectual Properties was discussed by Engr. Marinela Gravidez. She also gave a quick run through about UP Manila TTBDO and what our office can offer for their IP needs.
Throughout the webinar, the speakers delved into the different forms of intellectual property and their advantages. Stephen Chelben Lim, Technology Transfer Officer at UP Manila TTBDO, provided an overview of the copyright registration process, how to enforce copyright protection and the advantages of owning a copyright in his discussion of the nature and benefits of copyright protection.
Then, Kimberly Megan O. Chua, UP Manila TTBDO’s technology transfer officer, provided information on trademark protection. She gave a general explanation of the trademark registration procedure, how to enforce one’s ownership rights and the advantages of doing so. Engr. Kevin L. Ocampo spoke about the nature of patents and the benefits of patent protection; giving the audience a rundown of the patent application process, how to keep your patent protected, and the advantages of getting a patent.
The webinar gave participants a forum to ask questions and have a lively discussion with the speakers, who offered enlightening responses and viewpoints. Associate Dean for Research Marissa M. Alejandria, MD, MSc, FPCP, FPSMID delivered the closing remarks as the webinar reaches its conclusion.
Overall, the “Fundamentals on Intellectual Property” webinar was a valuable learning experience for medical professionals. The collaboration between the UP Manila Technology Transfer and Business Development Office and the UP Manila College of Medicine is a positive step towards promoting innovation, creativity, and intellectual property protection in the medical field.
