DESCRIPTION

The laryngoscope is a medical equipment used to visualize the opening between the vocal cords to secure the airway during intubation for patients requiring assistance in breathing.  The laryngoscope blade used requires at minimum high-level disinfection, which is a manual and time-consuming process of cleaning and disinfection.  In addition, the manual process of disinfection potentially exposes the clinicians to hazardous microorganisms and chemicals.

The invention is a laryngoscope blade disinfecting device that provides a fully automated high-level disinfection cycle. This would lessen the exposure of the clinicians to harmful chemicals and could also lessen the time required to clean the laryngoscope blades.

The World Health Organization declared Covid-19 as a global pandemic on March 11, 2020.  There are a total of 2, 549, 966 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 38, 294 deaths, as of October 01, 2021. Being mainly a respiratory disease, the pandemic has resulted in an increased need for intubation and ventilation.

The technology presented is applicable to healthcare institutions where laryngoscope blades are required to be cleaned, disinfected, or sterilized prior to use in the next patient. It comes in both portable and nonportable prototypes. The portable variant allows it to be carried by the healthcare personnel anywhere in and/or out of the hospital and use it in areas where intubation of the airway needs to be performed.
